PALAZZO DELLA CORGNA

PALAZZO DELLA CORGNA IS THE RENAISSANCE PALACE PAR EXCELLENCE, ONCE THE PRIVATE HOME OF THE BROTHERS ASCANIO AND FULVIO DELLA CORGNA, MARQUISES AND LORDS OF CITTÀ DELLA PIEVE.

Located in front of the Cathedral in a dominant position, Palazzo della Corgna was the private home of the brothers Ascanio and Fulvio della Corgna, nephews of Pope Jiulius III del Monte, Marquises and lords of Città della Pieve and Castiglion del Lago. Despite their blood bond they couldn’t be more different. Ascanio was a warlord and a leader, he lived an adventurous life and died in 1571 after the Battle of Lepanto against the Ottoman Empre. He was one of the Christian army leaders, while Fulvio was a clever cardinal. Both wer e men of culture, as evidenced by the frescoes inside their house. They were classical music enthusiasts and had poets, musicians, and painters in their court, including the famous mannerist painter Pomarancio and the poet Cesare Caporali. The main hall on the ground floor was decorated with frescoes representing grotesque scenes from the myth: “Il Concerto delle Muse” by Pomarancio. On the first floor instead are “Il Convivio degli Dei” and “Gli Amori degli Dei”, from the Metamorphosis of Ovid, by Salvio Savini (1580). The very interesting Museum of Natural Science is also located on the first floor, with a collection of fossil and mineral findings, a Xylotheque and a Spermoteque, and a representation of the geological evolution of the territory.
