GLASS MUSEUM

THE GLASS MUSEUM INSIDE THE ANCIENT GLASS FACTORY SAFEGUARDS THE PRODUCTS AND SECRETS OF THE CENTURIES-OLD GLASSMAKING TRADITION OF PIEGARO.

The Glass Museum, officially opened the 18th of April 2009, preserves the original appearance of the glass factory and safeguards many types of artifacts that came out of the furnaces. Only the base of the perimeter wall remains of the old smelting furnace, with the last glass melt inside before it was turned off in 1968. At that moment a large amount of incandescent glass, still inside the smelting basin, was drained away into a room in the basement. The emerald green glass melt is without a doubt the most charming view inside the museum, a monument dedicated to Piegaro and centuries of productive artisanal history. Among the oldest and more prestigious artifacts is the tableware that once belonged to the Misciattelli family (19th century): cups, bottles, pitchers and other containers, usually made of clear glass with engraved and painted decorations.
There are also many wine containers, flasks and jugs in particular, sometimes made with the blowing technique and sometimes with semi-automatic machineries. The building has three floors, On the top floor were once the offices, now a conference hall and a workshop. In the museum are often held conferences, seminaries, art and craft workshops, didactic and educational workshops for children and teenagers, as well as many other activities. The Municipality recently acquired a new furnace for glass manifacturing, a glass smelter and lampworking torches for glass blowing. Thanks to this instruments it is now possible to hold cultural events such as temporary exhibitions, demonstrations, glassmaking workshops and glass-blowing courses.
