A Literary Academy already existed in Città della Pieve in the 1590s, initially called “degli Inculti”, then “degli Insensati”, and finally “dei Neghittosi”. The “Accademia dei Neghittosi” built a wooden theater in 1720, followed by the actual brickwork construction. The Avvaloranti Theater, designed in neoclassical style by the architect Giovanni Santini, officially opened in 1834. The curtain is particularly valuable, painted in 1870 by Mariano Piervittori, it depicts Perugino with his wife Chiara Fancelli and a group of pupils, among them Raffello.
