THE “CESARE CAPORALI” THEATER
THE CESARE CAPORALI THEATER IN PANICALE IS A TRUE ARCHITECTURAL GEM, AMONG THE SMALLEST THEATERS IN ITALY.
An architectural gem and one of the smallest theaters in Italy, the Panicale Theater still hosts small music festivals, prose seasons and a chamber opera festival. This small theater was built by a group of young Panicale citizens, who reunited “per fuggire l’ozio e unire gli animi (…) avendo portato a buon termine un nuovo teatro” (to escape laziness and unite souls), as stated by the original document (August the 14th, 1692). In 1786, thanks to a new theater academy, the building was restored by Francesco Tarducci and named Teatro del Sole. It was only in 1856 that the theater was entirely renovated by Giovanni Caproni. The interior decorations and paintings were made by Alceste Ricci, an artist from Perugia, who glorified the landscape thanks to ornamentations, gildings and stuccoes, refining the Theater immensely. In the meantime, the theater was named after Cesare Caporali (1539-1601), a famous “Bernesco” poet, probably born in Panicale and part of the Corgna court. The backdrop was painted by Mariano Piervittori in the 19th century and it depicts Boldrino da Panicale, a soldier of fortune who lived there in the Middle Ages, while he receives the keys to Perugia by the Priors of the city, because he saved them against a horde of Bretons.
