THE FILARMONICA THEATER OF CORCIANO
The Theater was build at the end of 1800 an it’s part of the monumental complex developed around the Church Museum of San Francesco. It was Monsignor Nazareno Marzolini, a young priest from Perugia, who sent 10000 lire (italian currency at the time) to build the small theater. Many plays livened it up since then, mostly thanks to the young seminarists who lived in Corciano during the summer, In 1959 the Curia decided to sell the complex: the monastery was bought by a family from Corciano and the small theater became the local seat of the Filarmonica, while the authorities safeguarded the Church of San Francesco. The Filarmonica, originally formed in 1882, expanded the theater, adding a new area just beside a small stonewall. Inside this new area is a lovely curtain made in 1906 by Lorenzo Carloni, a painter from Perugia, and given as a gift by Pope Leo XIII to the Seminary. The curtain shows an event of local history: the meeting between Cardinal Fulvio della Corgna, Bishop of Perugia until the first half of the 1500, and the young Marcantonio Bonciario. Behind the Bishop is Monsignor Marzolini, the financial backer of the theater. In 2005 the Philharmonic gave the entire structure to the Municipality who restored it and expanded it, the new theater was inaugurated on August 6, 2011.The Prose Season is held every year since 2014, in collaboration with the “Teatro Stabile” of Umbria.
