PERMANENT EXHIBITION CENTER ON MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE CULTURE – THE MEDIEVAL TOWER OF PORTA SANTA MARIA
THE TOWER WAS BUILT IN 1482 IN CORCIANO AS A DEFENSIVE STRUCTURE, SINCE 2015 IT HOUSES THE PERMANENT EXHIBITION CENTER ON MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE CULTURE, A JOURNEY AT THE DISCOVERY OF LOCAL HISTORY, HISTORICAL WEAPONS AND WOOD ART.
The Tower was built in 1482 in Corciano as a defensive structure. Designed by Pietro Lombardi and made by Bartolo di Meo Lombardo, renown experts who were very active in Perugia and Umbria at that time. With a circular layout and a structure which tightens towards the center and becomes wider in the lower and upper parts, the Tower is right next to Porta Santa Maria, the only remaining ancient gate of the two. The Tower became an exhibition center in 2015 and it’s divided into three small areas: the “Sala dei Massari”, on street level, where some attack and defense weapons, as well as military gear, used in a typical castle from that territory between the 15th an the 16th century, are kept; the “Sala delle Bertesche”, on the top floor, with wooden sculptures from the 15th/16th century, testimonies of the artistic local history, as well as the community acts and the statute of the Castle of Corciano, with the rules in place concerning the municipality, its administration and its relationship towards Perugia and the Holy See; lastly the “Sala della Chiave”, on the lower floor, where the ancient keys to the city are kept, together with some pictures representing Corciano and how it changed over the centuries.
